Leitbild

Franz Schubert Department of Winds and Percussion Instruments in Music Education

Mission statement

The Franz Schubert Department’s special emphasis on wind and percussion instruments in the ME/IME and IGP music-education curricula is unique in Austria.

The students receive first-class artistic training on their instrument and simultaneously a comprehensive education in music pedagogy. The resulting curriculum is a combination of artistic, practical, and theoretical major subjects that are in part firmly anchored in the curriculum and can be combined with interesting electives. n addition, students select a specialisation.

The goal is for the students to attain a high level of quality on their instrument in order for them to be able to hold their own in performance situations. Topics such as interpretation, music theory, physiology, mental aspects, and the development of effective practice techniques play an important role in this regard.

An equally important goal is equipping the students with the educational tools necessary to pass on their acquired instrumental skills and specialised knowledge to their pupils in an age-appropriate manner. They should acquire the ability to teach music in a lively and creative manner and to spark young people’s enthusiasm for music.

Ultimately, graduates of the programme should mature into educationally successful and satisfied teachers who are themselves artistically and creatively active in cultural life. They should enjoy making music and teaching, see their profession as a calling, and be open for new ideas, consistently draw fresh motivation from them.

The teaching staff at the Franz Schubert Department is made up of instructors with superb artistic reputations and outstanding educational qualifications, who pass on their rich wealth of experience to their students. Openness for new developments in education and interpretation and at the same time the preservation of a musical tradition typical for Austria are important pillars of this training programme.
