Musicians' Health Digital Toolbox

On these pages you will find information if you are suffering from musician-specific complaints and are looking for a specialist. We also provide information material on selected health topics.

As a matter of principle, this information cannot and must not replace a visit to your doctor!

All staff members of the Music Physiology Unit will be happy to help you find doctors and therapists who specialise in treating musicians. But – whether your problems are playing-related or not, psychological or physical – if your health is impaired, the order is always:

1. Get a medical assessment

  • If you have pain in your hand, forearm, shoulder or neck, please see your general practitioner (GP) first.
  • Your GP will make a diagnosis and, if necessary, refer you to physiotherapy or for further examinations.

2. Make use of support

  • Take part in the courses offered by the Music Physiology Unit. There you will work with experts to analyse your playing posture and physical strain, and receive individual exercises at your instrument tailored to your specific issue.

3. Adapt your practice habits

  • Reduce your practice time (shorter but more frequent sessions), schedule regular breaks and adjust your repertoire.
