Mentoring-programme for artists at the mdw who aspire to a university career (women, inter* and non-binary persons)

Application deadline December 10, 2023

The mdw - University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna invites graduates of an artistic or artistic-pedagogical subject at the mdw to participate in a mentoring programme lasting several months. In light of the fact that the music and art business in general, and art universities in particular, are still characterised by structural gender inequalities that are reflected in the underrepresentation of women, inter* and non-binary persons as professors and artists in university leadership positions, the programme aims to take action to counteract the unequal treatment over the course of their artistic and pedagogical careers.

What is the mdw mentoring programme?

This mdw mentoring programme is a several-month career development programme for graduates of an artistic or artistic-pedagogical subject at the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna that aims to provide support to women, inter* and non-binary individuals in the strategic planning of their university careers.

The programme is built upon the following elements:

  • It makes available the expertise of mentors who are renowned in the international art-university context to small groups of three mentees each
  • It encourages networking and peer mentoring as central programme elements.
  • It views the promotion of women in the context of diversity and intersectionality.

Programme

The mdw Mentoring Programme is composed of four elements: a skills training, mentoring in small groups, individual coaching and peer mentoring. The three skills training modules represent a significant component of this mentoring programme. They serve to convey knowledge on career-relevant topics, to analyse the artistic and university working environment, to expand upon and hone soft skills as well as the ability to self-reflect.

The Mentoring Programme focuses at strategically developing careers in a university context; therefore it is not aimed at the content and specificities of the participants' individual artistic genres. The international mentors work with small groups of three people. This form of mentoring enables individual guidance, support, and personal exchange with an international mentor. At the same time, there is also an intensive exchange with the peers, who support and advise each other collegially.

Furthermore, participants can take advantage of up to two individual coaching appointments with experienced coaches.

The Mentoring Programme is conducted in German. Detailed information about the programme (in German) you find here.
