Joseph Haydn Institut für Kammermusik und Neue Musik

Welcome at the Website of the Joseph Haydn Department!
The Joseph Haydn Department (IJH) was founded in 2002 and is regarded as an international leader in the field of chamber music education.
The IJH offers the required chamber music courses for all performance majors at the mdw and thus supports approximately 400 students each semester.
The Joseph Haydn Institute’s artistic administration office organises the running of regular large-scale projects such as the International J. Haydn Chamber Music Competition and the European Chamber Music Academy (ECMA), as well as arranging for ensembles to perform at external events and to take part in a wide variety of collaborative projects.
Making music together means engaging with other people, trusting one another, acting in unison or in contrast, entering into a dialogue through instruments, and ‘telling stories’. Interpretation is the act of telling precisely those stories that composers have left behind.
All the experience you gain at the IJH in theoretical subjects and your instrumental major combines here, is checked for suitability and is memorized for practical knowledge.
Whether for a career in an orchestra, as a soloist, in a professional ensemble or in teaching – a thorough grounding in chamber music is essential.
Furthermore, ensemble work fosters organisational and communication skills – qualities that are indispensable for a career as a musician!
Following Studies are available at the Joseph-Haydn-Department:
Piano Chamber Music BA
MA Chamber Music (for Piano, String- and Windinstruments)
ECMAster
Postgraduate Certificate in Chamber Music
The preparatory courses also place greater emphasis on chamber music and provide opportunities for ensemble playing.
