Women's Advancement

§ 41 of the Austrian Universities Act of 2002 entails a “Duty of Career Advancement for Women” that reads as follows:

“All University bodies shall make efforts to achieve a balanced representation of men and women at work in all areas of university activities. Appropriate action shall be taken to attain this goal, particularly by means of the adoption and implementation of a career advancement plan for women.”

The Women’s Advancement Plan of the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna is part of the mdw Statutes, which are accessible at www.mdw.ac.at/senat/satzung.

In the document entitled “Geschlechterdimensionen” [Gender Dimensions] (until 2016: “Frauenquoten” [Women’s Quotas]), which is a statistical overview of gender distributions at all levels of the University compiled annually by the Working Group on Equal Opportunities (AKG), you can read about the current state of this distribution. Please note that these data are expressed as headcounts and not as full-time equivalents!

The mdw’s gender projects also incorporate concrete women’s advancement measures. Such projects include:

  • Holz-Blech-Schlag [Woodwinds-Brass-Percussion]: I – Clarinet / II – Trumpet / III – Percussion / IV – Bassoon / V – Horn

As part of this master class, new musical works are commissioned from selected female composing students as well as alumni; the resulting works are premièred as part of the project’s final event. Doblinger publishes a selection of the premièred pieces.
