Skandal? Courage!

(c)Marlene Rosenthal, (c)Natalia Świdlicka, (c)Michael Arivony, (c)Theresa Pewal

Thursday, 13.06.2024, 8pm
Musikverein, Metallener Saal

All the composers on this evening had to overcome conventions and needed courage to follow their artistic path.

Germaine Tailleferre, the only woman in the "Group des Six", fought hard for her life as a musician. Her piano trio is one of her best-known works.

Hugo Wolf had major financial problems and a complicated personality. Nevertheless, he created music against traditional rules of beauty and form. His songs are indispensable today.

Erwin Schulhoff's Sonata erotica is a Dadaist work full of irony. Marie-Luise Stockinger examines the courage to perform this work today.

Mieczysław Weinberg suffered under Stalinist repression and narrowly escaped terror. One of his violin sonatas can be heard this evening.

Schulhoff's Jazz Etudes, written in 1926, ensured his survival in Prague's jazz cellars before the start of the war. Shortly afterwards, he was imprisoned as a communist and died in the camp.

An evening as part of the Vienna Musikverein's "Courage" program.

Tickets are now on sale to the general public.

Complimentary (or nominal fee) tickets at €10 will be available at the mdw Infopoint from tba
