Abstract deutsch
Die Briefwechsel zwischen Arnold Schönberg und den Musikverlagen Dreililien (Berlin) und Universal-Edition (Wien) stellen mit 1.600 Schriftstücken aus den Jahren 1902–51 das größte Konvolut der gesamten Schönberg- bzw. Wiener Schule-Korrespondenz dar. Der Inhaltsschwerpunkt liegt vor 1933, bedingt durch die Emigration des jüdischen Komponisten in die Vereinigten Staaten nach Machtergreifung der Nationalsozialisten. Ziel ist die Erarbeitung einer historisch-kritischen Hybrid-Edition dieses Briefwechsels. Der Disposition der Edition liegt die Hypothese zugrunde, dass die heterogenen Quellen, die bisweilen non-lineare Struktur der Kommunikation zwischen Individuum und Unternehmen sowie die für Verlagsbriefwechsel charakteristischen, detaillierten inhaltlichen Bezugnahmen auf Herstellungsprozesse von Notentexten in Form einer Hybrid-Edition adäquat erschlossen werden können.
Forschungsfragen richten sich insbesondere auf die strukturelle Optimierung der Publikationsmedien in einem erweiterten editionsphilologischen Ansatz. Der Verlagsbriefwechsel beruht auf dem Prinzip der Interkontextualität. Der methodische Ansatz in der Online-Edition sieht vor, Kontexte durch Zusammenführung von Briefen mit kommentarrelevanten Quellen, die typologisch über die Textsorte Brief hinausgehen, zu erschließen. Thematisierte Sachverhalte werden bei gleichzeitiger Reduktion deskriptiver Kommentaranteile in ihrer Tiefenstruktur ausgeschöpft. Die Texte werden in XML nach den TEI-Richtlinien codiert. Die digitalen Faksimiles, welche der Edition zugrunde liegen, werden nach dem IIIF-Standard integriert. Für die Bearbeitung der Texte auf der Online-Plattform wird ein XML-Schema adaptiert, das die Spezifika der Verlagskorrespondenz berücksichtigt. Die historisch-kritische Edition stellt die erste Gesamtausgabe eines Schönberg-Verlagsbriefwechsels dar. Erstmals erscheint zudem ein Briefwechsel der Wiener Schule als Hybrid-Edition. Der Neuigkeitsgrad des Projekts zeigt sich in einem innovativen Referenzmodell, welches im Bereich der Kommentierung über allgemeine editorische Standards hinaus Spezifika der Referenzierung von Textinhalten ausarbeitet. Das Editionsteam kann hierbei auf den Quellenbestand des Arnold Schönberg Center in Wien mit 385 internationalen Provenienzen zurückgreifen.
Verlagsbriefwechsel rücken im Zuge der Erweiterung des theoretischen Rahmens über werk-, personen- und institutionsbezogene Forschung hinaus in den Blickpunkt des Interesses. Die Edition steht im spezifischen Forschungskontext zu Arnold Schönberg und der Wiener Schule sowie zum Musikverlagswesen. Sie kann relationalen und prozessorientierten Fragestellungen als Grundlage dienen und bietet einen Materialfundus für Exilforschung sowie Cultural Studies.
Abstract english
The correspondence between Arnold Schönberg and the music publishers Universal-Edition (Vienna) and Verlag Dreililien (Berlin) constitutes the largest collection of letters in the entire correspondence by Schönberg and the Viennese School, with 1,600 documents from the years 1902–51. Most letters were written before 1933, owing to Schönberg’s emigration – as a Jewish composer – to the US after the National Socialists seized power. The objective of the project is to prepare and publish a critical hybrid (online/printed) edition of this correspondence. The nature of the edition is based on the hypothesis that the heterogeneous sources, the occasionally non-linear structure of the communication between individual and corporate enterprise, and also detailed references in the content to the score production processes, which are characteristic of correspondence with publishing houses, can be made adequately accessible in the form of a hybrid edition.
Research questions especially address the structural optimization of publishing media in a broadened philological approach to the edition.
The correspondence with the publishing houses is based on the principle of intercontextuality. The approach/methods in the online edition intend to make contexts accessible by combining letters with sources that are relevant for commentary. The thematized issues are explored in full, although the volume of descriptive commentary is reduced. Texts are coded in XML according to TEI guidelines. An existing XML schema will be adapted with regard of the specifics of publishing house correspondence.
This critical edition is the first complete edition of Schönberg’s correspondence with his publishers. It is also the first publication of correspondence by the Viennese School as a hybrid edition. The project’s level of originality is displayed in an innovative referencing model where key specifics of text content referencing are elaborated in the commentaries in greater detail than general editorial standards. To this end, the editorial team can draw on the source material at the Arnold Schönberg Center in Vienna with its 385 international provenances. By extending the theoretical framework beyond the research of works, persons and institutions, correspondence with publishers becomes a focal point of cultural-historical research. Arnold Schönberg and the Viennese School, as well as music publishing, represent the wider research context of the edition. It can be used as the basis for relational and process-oriented questions and offers a pool of materials for research on exile, as well as cultural studies.
