Program

Works by Ludwig van Beethoven arranged for saxophone quartet – from the "Pathétique" to the "Three Equali" – as well as selected songs and new compositions by mdw students.

The fascination with Ludwig van Beethoven extends far beyond his lifetime. The cult surrounding the composer, the at times eccentric veneration of his person after his death, and the engagement of subsequent generations with this "titan" form the starting point for a concert program that places Beethoven's music in a new context.

Among the works to be heard is the famous piano sonata "Pathétique" in an unusual arrangement for saxophone quartet, as well as a selection of his songs. In addition, four young composers from the mdw present new works that engage with Beethoven and his musical legacy in different ways.

The evening concludes with three works for trombone quartet by Beethoven that were performed at his funeral and have been newly arranged for saxophone quartet. This creates a compelling musical arc between historical remembrance and a contemporary perspective.
