Should I get insured?

Absolutely! Gaps in insurance coverage should be avoided, as medical expenses can be very high in case of illness.
 

Which insurance applies to me?

The Austrian social insurance system generally distinguishes between employees and the self-employed.

Artists = so-called "New Self-Employed" → The competent authority for artists is the Social Insurance Institution for the Self-Employed (SVS).
The SVS includes accident, health, and pension insurance, as well as a self-employment provision fund.
 

What is the insurance threshold?

Mandatory insurance → Threshold = Income from self-employment (after deducting business expenses) exceeding €6,613.20 per year (2025)
→ This includes accident, health, and pension insurance, as well as the self-employment provision fund.

If your income is below the insurance threshold, you should still voluntarily opt into health and accident insurance at the SVS through a so-called “Opting In” arrangement.
 

Is there financial support for insurance contributions?

Artists whose income exceeds the mandatory insurance threshold can receive support through the Artists’ Social Insurance Fund (KSVF).

The KSVF provides subsidies for self-employed artists’ social insurance contributions and can grant emergency assistance in critical situations.
Your income must come from self-employed artistic work. Important: Artistic side jobs, such as teaching, are only partially recognized!
 

What steps should I take?

  • Go to www.svs.at → Insurance Registration for New Self-Employed (form: Insurance Declaration for Freelancers).

  • Complete the form and submit it to the responsible regional SVS office.

  • The SVS will then contact you and inform you about the contributions you need to pay.

  • If you meet the Artists' Social Insurance Fund (KSVF) requirements, you can then apply for a contribution subsidy.
