Heinrich Schiff Cello Competition

Open to all VBL, BA, and MA students of the Violoncello program (ZkF and IGP) at the mdw

 

 


 

 

Preselection:

Thursday, January 22th, 2026

Final selection:
Friday, January 23th, 2026

Lothringerstraße/Franz Liszt-Hall

 

Program:

First Round:

  • One movement from the Cello Sonata by Dr. Alfred Huber (mandatory piece)
    (Please request sheet music via email at ostroverkhova@mdw.ac.at)

  • A virtuosic piece of your choice (max. 5 minutes)

  • A prelude by J.S. Bach from Solo Suites No. 4 or 6

  • Franz Schubert Arpeggione Sonata in A minor, D 821 – I. Allegro moderato

Second Round:

  • Robert Schumann: Concerto for Cello and Orchestra in A minor, Op. 129

    Participants are responsible for organizing their own accompanists.

 

Prizes 2026:

  • 1st Prize: €1,500 donated by composer Alfred Huber,
    as well as a concert performance with the North Czech Philharmonic Orchestra
    on June 4, 2026, at the Philharmonic Hall Teplice, Czech Republic
    (performance of Schumann's Cello Concerto in A minor, Op. 129)

  • 2nd Prize: €1,000 donated by composer Alfred Huber

  • 3rd Prize: €500 donated by composer Alfred Huber

  • Alfred Huber Special Prize: €500 for the best interpretation of his sonata
