Stefanie Hohl Competition

Institute-internal competition
for regular students of violin studies

 

 

The competition is based on a testamentary donation of the late Mrs. Stefanie Hohl and has been held annually since 1979. All students of the violin department of the Fritz Kreisler Institute are eligible to participate.


The competition consists of two public rounds, after which the jury decides whether the prize is to be awarded to one person or divided among several eligible candidates.

Wednesday, March 25th, 2026

Final selection:
Thursday, March 26th, 2026

 

Program:

 

In the first round:

 

  1. J.S. Bach: The first and second movement of a Sonata or the Chaconne from the 2nd Partita from the 6 Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin, BWV 1001-1006.

  2. N. Paganini: One Caprice from the 24 Caprices, Op. 1.

  3. W.A. Mozart: First movement from one of the 3 Violin Concertos : KV216, KV218, KV219 (till reprise) with cadenza.

  4. A. Huber: First or third movement from the Piano Sonata for Violin and Piano, Op. 32 or Sonatina for Violin solo, Op. 41 (For sheet music, please inquire via email at ostroverkhova@mdw.ac.at)

 

In the second round:

A complete Violin Concerto (major violin concertos, starting with L.v. Beethoven).

Accompanists are to be arranged by participants themselves.

 

Prizes 2025:

1st Prize:
 

  • €1,500 donated by the composer Alfred Huber
  • high-quality Musafia violin case from the Master Series, donated by Prof. Lothar Strauß

  • concert at the Grado Basilica with the FVG Chamber Orchestra (on September 1, 2026) — donated by the IMK Association for International Music and Cultural Promotion (“The Four Seasons” by Antonio Vivaldi)

  • Concert with the Romanian State Orchestra at the Alba International Music Festival on May 30, 2026 (Concerto by J.S. Bach BWV 1043 for two violins, 2nd violin)


2nd Prize: €1,000 donated by the composer Alfred Huber + a carbon violin bow donated by Prof. Eszter Haffner


3rd Prize: €500 donated by the composer Alfred Huber


A special prize of €500 for the best interpretation of the compulsory piece by Alfred Huber, donated by the composer Alfred Huber

All participants receive a set of violin strings, sponsored by the company Jargar Strings from Denmark.
