TODAS. Latin American Women* Musicians in Vienna.
Concerts, Lecture, Dialogues.
in cooperation with the Music and Minorities Research Center and Opera Trip.
TODAS is a two-day academic and artistic festival addressing the unique position of women musicians from Latin America in Europe, alongside the associated challenges of categorization, presentation, and marketing. Our aim is to illuminate how discourses on belonging and identity intertwine with national classifications, musical expectations, and cultural "othering."
The word "todas"—the feminine form of "all" in Spanish—serves as the program's guiding principle: Latin American women musicians* in the diaspora, in all their diversity of origin, musical creation, and social positioning, are brought into the spotlight. They enter into dialogue with academic contributions that explore the mechanisms behind the stereotyping of Latin American women and examine the role of research in relation to current musical practice within a post-migrant society.
Concerts featuring six outstanding contemporary women* musicians based in Vienna, originating from diverse Latin American countries and performing across a range of musical genres, will be complemented on the first day by a keynote address from ethnomusicologist Sydney Hutchinson (Berlin). The second day opens with a panel discussion titled The Pitfalls of Re/Presentation of Latin American Women* Musicians, bringing together scholars and musicians in dialogue about addressing the various stereotypes and lived realities of Latin American women* musicians in both academic and practical musical contexts. Through this academic-artistic festival, we aim to address a significant gap in the visibility and recognition of this diaspora—not only in Vienna but also within academic music research.
The invited performers are: Laura Aya, Amelia Bernal, Florencia Hernández, Sonia Hernández, Natalia Hurst and Laura Valbuena.
The festival is organised within the research project Reverse Ethnomusicology and is the result of a research by Gabriela Dossow Ponce entitled "Women and fem Latin American musicians in Vienna: in plural".
