Artists’ 100th birthdays are eagerly embraced as opportunities to take a renewed deep dive into their oeuvres. In 2023, both on these pages and elsewhere, the mdw is devoting special attention to the Hungarian-Austrian composer György Ligeti. On multiple levels, in the form of concerts as well as from a scholarly standpoint, a spotlight is being trained on his compositional output, his quest for ever-new forms and avenues of musical expression, his diverse sources of inspiration, and also his interest in other subject areas in order to cultivate more familiarity with and a better understanding of this supremely versatile artist.
