Cecilia Björk ist Assistenzprofessorin (Tenure Track) für Musikschulforschung am Institut für Musikpädagogische Forschung und Praxis. Sie ist Initiatorin und Leiterin des Permanent Scientific Committee for European Music School Research.
Björk studierte Musikerziehung, Klavierpädagogik und Chorleitung an der Sibelius-Akademie in Helsinki. 2016 erhielt ihre Dissertation „In search of good relationships to music. Understanding aspiration and challenge in developing music school teacher practices” an der Åbo Akademi University (ÅAU) in Finnland die höchstmöglichen Auszeichnung (Laudatur). Bevor sie 2022 ihre Stelle an der mdw antrat, war sie Lektorin und Postdoctoral Researcher für Musikpädagogik an der ÅAU. Sie war zudem als Musikjournalistin und Musikkritikerin tätig und arbeitete viele Jahre als Radio-Produzentin beim Sender Musiq’3 der Radio-télévision belge de la Communauté française (RTBF).
Björks aktuelle Forschungsinteressen umfassen Bildungspolitik und -praxis in europäischen Musikschulen, Forschungsmethodologie in der Musikpädagogik, Musikpädagogische Philosophie sowie Prozesse des musikalischen Verstehens. In den letzten Jahren hat sie sich insbesondere auf ethische Fragestellungen im Zusammenhang mit Praxis, Politikgestaltung und Forschung im Bereich der Musikpädagogik konzentriert.
Sie war Leiterin (Principal Investigator) mehrerer internationaler Drittmittel-Forschungsprojekte, darunter
• Bridging the theory and practice of music through educational research and technology in Zusammenarbeit mit der New York University Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development (USA) und der Novia University of Applied Sciences (Finnland),
• Equal music education in grades 1–6 in Zusammenarbeit mit Kollegen der Sibelius-Akademie / University of the Arts Helsinki (Finnland), der Nord University (Norwegen) und der University of Oxford (UK), sowie
• Competence in music education in Zusammenarbeit mit der Nord University (Norwegen) und der Universität Augsburg.
Im Rahmen ihrer Forschung zum Lehren und Lernen von Musiktheorie war sie aktiv an der Entwicklung und am Design der digitalen Lernumgebung und Webapplikation Notio beteiligt, die in Zusammenarbeit mit dem NYU Music Experience Design Lab, der ÅAU und dessen Experience Lab, der Novia University of Applied Sciences, sowie Entwickler_innen aus Dänemark, Frankreich und Mexiko entstand.
Cecilia Björks Arbeiten wurden in finnischen und internationalen Fachzeitschriften und Büchern veröffentlicht. Sie ist Mitglied des wissenschaftlichen Beirats der Beiträge empirischer Musikpädagogik und des Redaktionsrates des Finnish Journal of Music Education sowie Mitglied des Vorstandes des Nordischen Netzwerks für Forschung im Bereich der Musik- und Kulturschulen.
Cecilia Björk is Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) of Music School Research at the Department of Music Education Research and Practice. She is the initiator and leader of the Permanent Scientific Committee for European Music School Research.
Björk studied music education, piano pedagogy and choir conducting at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. In 2016, her doctoral dissertation “In search of good relationships to music. Understanding aspiration and challenge in developing music school teacher practices” was awarded the highest possible grade (Laudatur) at the Åbo Akademi University (ÅAU) in Finland. Before she took up her position at the mdw in 2022, she was a University Lecturer and postdoctoral researcher at ÅAU. She also has a background as a music journalist, music critic, and long-time radio producer for the channel Musiq’3 at the Radio-télévision belge de la Communauté française (RTBF).
Cecilia Björk’s current research interests include music education policy and practice in European music schools, research methodology in music education, philosophy of music education, and processes of musical understanding. In recent years, she has focused in particular on ethical questions relating to practices, policymaking, and research in the field of music education.
She has led several externally funded international research projects as principal investigator, including
• Bridging the theory and practice of music through educational research and technology in collaboration with the New York University Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development (USA) and Novia University of Applied Sciences (Finland),
• Equal music education in grades 1–6 in collaboration with colleagues from the Sibelius Academy/University of the Arts Helsinki (Finland), Nord University (Norway) and the University of Oxford, and
• Competence in music education in collaboration with Nord University (Norwegen) and the University of Augsburg.
In the context of her research on teaching and learning to theorise music, she was active in the development and design of the digital learning environment and application Notio, which was created in collaboration with the NYU Music Experience Design Lab, ÅAU and its Experience Lab, Novia University of Applied Sciences, and developers from Denmark, France, and Mexico.
Cecilia Björk’s work has been published in Finnish and international research journals and books. She is a member of the scientific advisory board of the journal Beiträge empirischer Musikpädagogik / Bulletin of Empirical Music Education Research, a member of the editorial board of the Finnish Journal of Music Education, and a board member of the Nordic network for music and kulturskole related research.
