Panel discussion: Ethnomusicology in times of the global authoritarian turn

Against the backdrop of global crises and rising global authoritarianism, this panel discussion brings together international scholars to examine our discipline's role and responsibilities in these increasingly fraught times. The key question is how we as scholars and artists can respond to these challenges within our institutions, our research fields, and beyond. The panel will address how to respond to the instrumentalization and appropriation of folk music and traditional music by far-right movements for nationalist and chauvinist purposes, strategies for responding to attacks on higher education and climates of fear and surveillance, the impacts of several global conflicts on research and collaboration and the increased push for decolonization and minority representation within our discipline. The discussion invites reflection on how to envision the future development of ethnomusicology and ethnochoreology by contributing to socio-political change in an era of increased authoritarianism.
