Syrische Diaspora

The Syrian civil war (since 2011) has led to the formation of a Syrian diaspora in various regions, including European countries. At the Department for Folk Music Research and Ethnomusicology, research on musicians from Syria is represented by Assistant Professor Anja Brunner. The research project “Women Musicians from Syria: Performance, Networks, Belonging/s after Migration” (2020–2024) documented and analyzed the biographies and musical developments of female and non-binary musicians after their forced migration. Further research on individual musicians and Syrian music practice in Europe is ongoing.
