Changes in the master's thesis area

The master's thesis is worth 24 ECTS credits (previously 30 ECTS credits) in Curriculum 25W and is accordingly shorter (60 to 80 pages). Alternatively, a project-based academic master's thesis can be written (see Information Sheet). The academic and artistic parts of the master's examination are worth 6 ECTS credits in Curriculum 25W.

Music and Dance in Global Contexts

In the Master's program in ethnomusicology, you will explore the diverse soundscapes of our world. You will gain a deep understanding of music and dance as living social and cultural phenomena and discover the meanings that these practices hold for people of various backgrounds. The program equips you with comprehensive skills in ethnomusicological research, integrating approaches from cultural and social anthropology, gender studies, and postcolonial theory while emphasizing a strong sense of socio-political responsibility.


Scholarly Engagement with Music and Dance

You will define your research focus in ethnomusicology. Through fieldwork, you can engage directly with the environments where music and dance take place, build personal connections with people and experience the significance of these practices in their cultural context. Along the way, you will enhance your analytical and critical thinking, preparing you for professional opportunities in research, art and culture.


Artistic Classes

A distinctive feature of our Master's program is the artistic specialization in a chosen music or dance practice, allowing you to get classes from individually assigned teachers or to develop your skills outside of the university. You can also explore other instruments, dance forms and singing styles from various regional, diasporic, and global traditions.
