Studium Instrumentalpädagogik (Querflöte) und Lehramt Musik an der Hochschule für Musik Detmold. Langjährige Tätigkeit an öffentlichen und privaten Musikschulen in Nordrhein-Westfalen. Von 2012 bis 2015 wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter im Forschungsverbundprojekt AdaptiMus an der Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, Lehrtätigkeiten zudem an den Musikhochschulen Mannheim und Stuttgart.
2016 Promotion im Fach Musikpädagogik an der HfMT Köln mit einer Dissertation zu Perspektiven von Lehrenden und Schüler:innen auf Bläserklassenunterricht. Die Studie wurde ausgezeichnet mit dem Forschungspreis des Arbeitskreises für Musikpädagogische Forschung und publiziert in der Reihe Perspektiven musikpädagogischer Forschung (2017). Auf das zweite Staatsexamen (2017) folgte eine Vertretungsprofessur für Musikpädagogik an der Universität Koblenz-Landau (2017/18) sowie eine Professur für Instrumentalpädagogik an der Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart (2018-22), wo Michael Göllner den Masterstudiengang IGP und das Studio für Instrumentalpädagogik leitete (2020-22). 2022 erfolgte der Ruf als Universitätsprofessur für Instrumental- und Gesangspädagogik an die mdw.
In seiner Forschung befasst sich Michael Göllner mit musikpädagogischer Unterrichtsforschung, dem Zusammenwirken von Musikschulen und Schulen, der Professionalisierung von Musikschullehrenden sowie Aspekten musikkultureller Teilhabe. Vorliegende Arbeiten fokussieren die Kooperationen von Lehrenden im Instrumentalklassenunterricht, den Umgang mit Heterogenität und die adaptive Gestaltung von Lern- und Musizierumgebungen sowie Schüler: innen-Perspektiven auf musikalische Bildungsangebote. Weitere Schwerpunkte liegen in der Auseinandersetzung mit methodologischen Aspekten qualitativer Forschung und dem Ansatz forschenden Lernens in der Musiklehrer:innenbildung. Michael Göllner ist Mitglied im Leitungsteams des Arbeitskreises für Qualitative Forschung in der Musikpädagogik (QFM) und Herausgeber des internationalen Journals Beiträge Empirischer Musikpädagogik.
Am IMP ist Michael Göllner zuständig für die Koordination und Weiterentwicklung des Fachbereichs IGP. Als Vorsitzender der Studienkommission IGP wirkt er zudem engagiert an der Weiterentwicklung von Studienumgebungen im Bereich Instrumental- und Gesangspädagogik mit (2022–2025 stellvertretend). Zudem ist Mitglied des Arbeitskreises der instrumenten- und gesangsspezifischen Fachdidaktik in IGP und Ersatz-Mitglied der Ethikkommission der mdw.

Michael Göllner studied instrumental pedagogy (flute) and music education at the Detmold University of Music. He was a flute teacher at public and private music schools in North Rhine-Westphalia and research assistant in the AdaptiMus-Section at the Cologne University of Music and Dance from 2012 to 2015. He also taught at the universities of music in Mannheim and Stuttgart.
In 2016, he completed his PhD in music education at the Cologne University of Music and Dance with a dissertation exploring teachers’ and students’ perspectives on concert bands (“Bläserklassen”). The study received the AMPF Research Award and was published in the series Perspectives on Music Education Research (2017). After passing his second state examination in 2017, he held a visiting professorship in music education at the University of Koblenz-Landau (2017–18) and subsequently a professorship in instrumental pedagogy at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts (2018–22), where he directed the Master’s programme in Instrumental and Vocal Pedagogy and the Studio for Instrumental Pedagogy (2020–22). In 2022, he was appointed University Professor of Instrumental and Vocal Pedagogy at the mdw.
Michael Göllner’s research focuses on the interplay between music schools and general education schools, the professional development of instrumental and vocal teachers, and issues of cultural participation in music. Current research focuses on collaboration among teachers in group instrumental settings, approaches to learner diversity, the adaptive design of teaching and learning environments, and students’ perspectives on musical education contexts. Further areas of focus include methodological questions of qualitative research and the concept of research-based learning in music teacher education. Michael Göllner is a member of the steering committee of the Working Group for Qualitative Research in Music Education (QFM) and serves as editor of the international journal Bulletin of empirical music education research.
At the Department of Music Education Research and Practice (IMP), Göllner is responsible for coordinating and further developing the Department of Instrumental and Vocal Pedagogy. As Chair of the IGP Study Commission (deputy 2022–2025), he is actively involved in advancing study environments in instrumental and vocal pedagogy. He also serves as an alternate member of the mdw Ethics Committee.
