Submission Guidelines

mdwPress is open to all academic publication formats, including journals and innovative web publications. At the time of submitting a proposal, at least one editor (for editorial projects) or one author (for independent works) must work or study at the mdw.

The mdwPress Coordination asks authors and editors who want to publish with mdwPress to arrange a consultation appointment prior to the submission. During the consultation, a preliminary schedule and a financial plan can be developed, and questions about Open Access and licenses can be clarified. In the proposal, the importance of the publication for the academic community and the broader public should be made clear. The compliance with high discipline-specific academic standards must be substantiated. In addition, it should be described in detail which method of quality assurance the applicants propose to the mdwPress Academic Board.

Doctoral dissertations completed at mdw and awarded with distinction can also be submitted as book projects. Both the reports from the examination procedure and the book manuscript must be enclosed with the application. After approval by the Academic Board, the finalised manuscript becomes subject to a double, external peer review, which normally requires thorough revision of the submitted dissertation.

Acceptance Procedure

The mdwPress Academic Board meets at least three times a year to discuss submissions which must be ready at least a month in advance. In urgent cases, the Board can also decide upon submissions between meetings. In those cases, the applicant will miss the opportunity to present the publication project at the meeting. The decision will be communicated to the applicant within two weeks.

Service Description

Beyond the services offered by transcript, mdwPress provides support and consultations directly at the mdw. In a personal conversation we can concentrate on the concerns of the authors and respond to individual needs and requests.

mdwPress is well networked within the frameworks of the open access efforts in the Austrian academic environment and in the global movement for non-commercial publication services. Authors and editors benefit from that with a continuous development of the mdwPress services.

Publication Charges

While there are no fees for authors or editors of mdwPress journals, the production of print editions in cooperation with transcript is associated with costs that vary depending on the volume and features of the book. Funding from the open access publishing fund at the mdw is possible. Technically innovative publication projects are funded under the same conditions if for their implementation special infrastructures and expertise have to be employed with costs.
