Open Access Fund of mdw
mdw supports Open Access publications by mdw-affiliates. Depending on the budget, publications by mdw graduates that originated from their studies at the university may also be supported (see General Funding Conditions below).
Publications may include articles in journals and books as well as independent publications. The prerequisite for this is publication in journals or by publishers that are listed in internationally recognized indexes (e.g., Directory of Open Access Journals – DOAJ or Directory of Open Access Books – DOAB, etc.) – any exceptions must be justified.
Research data underlying the publication must be archived in a trustworthy repository, e.g., in the mdwRepository.
The Open Access Fund is generally available for Gold and Diamond Open Access publications. Green Open Access and the “buyout” of articles that are made available in subscription-based journals with paid open access options (hybrid model) should be avoided. Applications are only possible in justified exceptional cases.
Peer-reviewed journal articles, individual contributions to anthologies, etc. resulting from FWF projects are financed by the FWF as part of a lump sum for research institutions (OAP). This is handled by the Research Support Office (further information). Researchers working on an FWF project are requested to make use of this funding.
No funding application is required for articles published under Open Access publishing agreements, as the costs are charged directly. The mdw currently has such an agreement for the Humanities and Social Sciences package from Sage Publishing; see the list of journals. For more information, contact the University Library).
Funding is awarded by the Research Support Office upon application in addition to the funds provided by the Deprtments of the mdw or external funding. Publication costs may not be covered by other funding.
Funding from the mdw's Open Access Fund is awarded by the Research Support Office on a first-come, first-served basis and in accordance with the funds available. There is no legal entitlement to funding.
Funding is available for costs of up to € 1,000 per project (e.g. for APC1, editing, translation, etc.). In justified exceptional cases, larger amounts of funding, e.g. for BPC2, APC1 in renowned journals can be granted upon application (up to € 3,000).
Funding applications should be sent informally to the Project Service of the Research Support Office (forschungsfoerderung@mdw.ac.at). Applications can be submitted at any time.
Financial processing is to be carried out by the respective Department or organizational unit of the mdw. Retroactive payments are not possible.
A general funding condition for funding is that the authors or editors (“corresponding author”) must be affiliated with the mdw at the time of application. In justified exceptional cases, publications by mdw graduates may also be funded if they graduated no more than three years ago and if the publication originated from their studies at the mdw.
Application:
• Description of the publication project (title, author/editor/corresponding author(s), including ORCID ID, other authors if applicable, publisher, and relevant agreements)
• Cost calculation and financing plan, information on planned/submitted/approved funding applications
• Description of the peer review process or endorsement by an expert (for dissertations: endorsement by the supervisor)
Funding by the mdw must be acknowledged in an appropriate form, e.g.: “Gefördert aus den Mitteln des Open-Access-Publikationsfonds der mdw – Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien” or “Supported by the Open Access Fund of the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna” and, if possible, with the mdw logo.
After publication:
• Submit relevant information to the Research Support Office (in particular persistent identifiers, e.g., DOI) for documentation and presentation on the mdw website.
• Submit documents for internal billing (balanced invoice, SAP statement, and a completed internal billing form 'Interne Verrechnung') to the Research Support Office for further billing to the respective Department or organizational unit of the mdw.
• Archive the publication on the mdw's own publication platform pub.mdw.
