(04.02., 20h)
Neuwirth: “I am grateful to the organizers and promoters of Radio France/Festival Présences for offering my students a platform with my ‘Composition Lab’ to support them on this path, because it is becoming increasingly difficult for young composers to get commissions and intensive rehearsal opportunities at the highest level. I therefore see this visibility in such a diverse musical life in Paris not only as a wonderful opportunity for myself, but also for the young generation of composers.”

Between counterpoint and AI
The joy of creating music and the desire to turn one's inner imagination into a confident-sounding reality motivates people to study composition. But what skills must a student be given in order to develop as an independent artistic personality? Is it really necessary to be able to write fugues like Bach or analyse Beethoven's piano sonatas? Do you necessarily have to master an instrument or be able to read music? Is all this still relevant today? And what role do media and technology, and AI in particular, play in the study of composition? What relevance does experimentation have in principle in the current music scene? And does the future of music perhaps lie in the applied field? These and other questions will be addressed in this roundtable discussion.
Der Klang der Algorithmen?
// Adrian Kleinlosen
@Vortragssaal
(16.04., 10h)
Does music composed with the help of algorithms sound different from other music? Is there even, irrespective of all stylistic idiosyncrasies, a specific sonority of algorithmically generated music? And if so, what are the melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, morphological and compositional peculiarities of algorithmic music?
Adrian Kleinlosen is a composer and musicologist living in Hamburg. He studied jazz trombone in Graz, composition in Lucerne, Leipzig and Santa Cruz (USA) and received his doctorate in 2021 with a musicological thesis on "Morphology in Music". His compositional work centres on structural issues and working with algorithms. Kleinlosen composes instrumental music, vocal music, electro-acoustic music and computer music.

DeltaScore
// Wolfgang Suppan
@Vortragssaal
(19.03., 10h)
"The topic of the lecture is on the one hand [...] "DeltaScore", a computer programme developed by me for computer-aided composition (CAC), [...] on the other hand I would like to discuss the question to what extent software tools (also e.g. notation programmes) influence our artistic work in principle on the basis of application examples." // Wolfgang Suppan
Wolfgang Suppan studied with Dieter Kaufmann and Michael Jarrell at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and attended further courses in Berlin, Salzburg and Paris. His works have been performed at major festivals such as the Salzburg Festival, Wien Modern, musikprotokoll Graz, the Donaueschingen Music Festival, the Zagreb Music Biennale and by performers such as the Hagen Quartet, Klangforum Wien, Ensemble SurPlus Freiburg, Ensemble l'Itinéraire Paris and the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg. In addition to his intensive involvement with electronic music, he is also interested in interdisciplinary projects with film, dance and literature.

Obituary // ULRICH VETTE
It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to University Professor Ulrich Vette, an outstanding sound engineer, inspiring teacher and esteemed colleague who left a lasting mark on our institute. His work was characterized by an untiring passion for the art of sound recording and sound, and he deeply influenced generations of students not only professionally but also personally.
Ulrich Vette was a person with rough edges - someone who was not afraid to speak his mind and always demanded the highest precision and dedication from himself and others. These principles, combined with his attention to detail and tenacity, made him a master of his trade. He taught his students that true excellence can only be achieved through perseverance and uncompromising diligence.
He was highly respected for his exceptional expertise and tireless commitment. His dedication, knowledge and love of perfection will have a lasting impact and live on in the hearts of his students and colleagues.
Our deepest sympathy goes to his wife, his friends and all those who were close to him.

FEEDBACK RELOADED
// Artistic Lecture with Otto WANKE
@Vortragssaal
(25.03., 10h)

In my artistic lecture, we will further explore the role of feedback in dynamic systems, its fundamental presence in audio processing, and its compositional potential across different fields, including electroacoustic music, video, and 3D graphics. As cybernetician Norbert Wiener stated, “Feedback is the method of controlling a system by reinserting into it the results of its past performance.” In this sense, we will examine how feedback functions as a responsive mechanism in control structures—where sound actively shapes its own trajectory, creating evolving sonic forms.

In the concert, Vande Gorne will perform her one-hour work Haïku together with three other acousmatic compositions in the mdw's Klangtheater. Her work follows the tradition of Pierre Schaeffer and François Bayle and combines profound sound research with innovative spatial sound design.
SELF-OSCILLATION
CREATIVE USES OF FEEDBACK
// guest lecture: Adam PULTZ
@Klangtheater
(08.04., 10h)

Adam Pultz will demonstrate and discuss their work with hybrid electro-acoustic feedback systems, in particular the FAAB (feedback-actuated augmented bass). Combining the often unpredictable and non-linear behaviours of electro-acoustic feedback systems with signal processing allows for the creation of adaptive and self-organising processes that gives rise to autonomy at different levels and nodes in the network.
The visit is made possible through the STIP-4 stipend from Musikfonds Germany and is additionally funded by the European Union and the Goethe-Institut.
ZSOLT SŐRÉS
// Artist Talk
@Vortragssaal
(29.04., 12h15)
Zsolt Sőrés (Ahad) is a composer, improviser, “sound ontologist” and intermedia artist. Sőrés does not see himself as a conventional musician or sound composer, but uses the name “Ghost Sonic Ontologist” to describe himself and his professional endeavors. His art has always had higher ambitions than simply depicting reality - even if such an interpretation may overshoot the mark somewhat. The artist's sounds are captivating and at the same time bring to light social differences, anomalies, wounds, dystopias and utopias.
Artists Solidarity Program Europe
// final presentation
@Klangtheater
(28.04., 17h30)
The Artists Solidarity Program Europe (ASoP) is a scholarship program of the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs (BMEIA) that aims to support artists from the European cultural area whose work and existence are severely threatened by war, repression, and political upheaval. Over a period of three months, the scholarship holders develop their artistic projects and are supervised by mentors at the mdw.
The mdw's nominated ASoP Europe fellows Vlada LYSENKO (media composition) and Noot COHEN (singing) will present their artistic works in a multimedia concert.

@C0211
(08.05., 10h30)
The use of first-order beats in my Quatuor à cordes no.3 (2024)
The music of Joël-François Durand has been described as “transparently organized, attractively colored and surprisingly accessible, yet without compromise or reactionary pandering” (Records International). It is characterized by rigorous structural procedures tempered by an innate sense of lyricism and rich harmonic colors. His mastery of instrumental and harmonic colors has occasionally been attributed to his French heritage, but this should in no way obscure the fact that he is quick to highlight international influences, including those from non-Western traditions.

In his lecture, COX will provide insights into current projects that deal with listening as a creative practice and the political dimension of sound. This will be followed by a discussion with students. On the same evening, his work “Schattenspiel” (2023) will be premiered at the opening concert of Wien Modern 2025.
NETZE DER MACHT IN DER NEUE-MUSIK-SZENE
// lecture followed by Q&A with Dr. Andreas HOLZER
@Klangtheater
(05.11., 10h)

The power structure in differentiated democratic societies cannot be understood simply as certain groups of people exercising power over others. In social networks, whether in the sense of a scene, field, system, or dispositif, power inevitably arises (according to Hannah Arendt) in the communication and joint action of people. The complex network of the new music scene, consisting of actors, institutions, discourses, and artifacts, in conjunction with cultural-political conditions, must be understood as a constantly changing entity in which a wide variety of actions, strategies, and forms of resistance collide. Power relations are “defined by a form of action that does not directly and immediately affect others, but rather their actions” (Michel Foucault).

REVOX B77
// workshop w/ Jérôme NOETINGER
@Klangtheater
(14.11., 10-17h)

The primary function of the Revox B77 tape recorder (manufactured between 1977 and 1986) is to record and play back sounds in what is known as high-fidelity quality. I've been working with it since the late 80s, and as my practice has developed, I've taken this tape recorder on stage to play with it, and so instrumentalise it. I can record live using different types of microphone (dynamic, contact, electromagnetic, etc.), divert other audio sources (audio player, telephone, radio, etc.), and of course instrumental sources too. I work with loops, which means I can record and listen to the recording straight away, changing the playback, speed, scrolling, etc. You're in direct contact with the sound. You're in direct contact with the sound via the magnetic tape. It's an act of recuperation and misappropriation in the great tradition of the 20th-century avant-garde.
This workshop will offer an introduction to this magnetohone, followed by a group session of electroacoustic improvisation. How do you turn a machine designed to record and reproduce an audio signal into a sound-generating machine? And let's not forget that in experimental music-making, the process of making is as important, if not more important, than the result.
SPIEGELUNGEN
// winners' concert composition competition
@Konzertsaal
(14.11., 19h)

Spiegelungen ('reflections') – they can show us (more or less) familiar things from new perspectives or in a different light, and in today's event, they allow the past and present to enter into dialogue: the music of three composers from history encounters the creative work of today's students.
A collaborative event organized by the Mozarteum University Salzburg, the Anton Bruckner Private University Linz, and the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
