What we build on: Ethnomusicological Minority Research

There is a long history of minority research in ethnomusicology, although it was not always labelled as such. It includes the research on Native Americans as well as national approaches in Europe from the end of the 19th century. The emergence of urban ethnomusicology in the 1970s was an important input to minority studies, as well as the research on migration movements. Since 1997, the discourses on the topic have beeen greatly influenced by the ICTM Study Group on Music and Minorities. Every two years, the Study Group organizes a symposium at changing locations. Selected contributions from these events result in publications.
