The inaugural “reConnect mdw” alumni festival in October invited former students to return to their alma mater, network with current students and faculty, and transform the mdw into a lively place of memories.

It was through the Exilarte Center that the passionate chamber musicians of the Ineo Quartet first came into contact with banned music. And today, string quartets by composers such as Julius Bürger and Hans Gál have become fixtures of their repertoire.

It was in 2014 that the formally trained music therapist Verena Giesinger assumed musical leadership of the Wiener Schmusechor, a choir she’d founded herself—thereby veering off from her former professional path to embark upon a new career. Today, the mdw graduate has found fulfilment in conducting and is setting an example for more diversity in the music scene with her exceptional ensemble.

Looking beyond the Catholic realm, such as with interreligious projects like the musical setting of the Diary of Anne Frank by James Whitbourn, is a major concern of this enthusiastic church musician and organist. She’s looking to address diversity and provide motivation for new and exciting projects.

This music therapist’s five-month leave period to earn her degree after the fact coincided with the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. On 9 July 2020, former mdw student Gisela Zdenek will be turning 100. Research in the run-up to her birthday celebration led members of her family to the mdw Archive, which in turn drew our attention to this strong-willed woman’s life history—which has always been accompanied by music.
