Leonce und Lena

A musical comedy • based on the play of the same name by Georg Büchner • music by Erich Zeisl

"See here gentlemen and ladies, two persons of both sexes, a male and a female, a gentleman and a lady. Nothing but art and mechanism, nothing but cardboard covers and watch springs. (...) Take care, gentlemen and ladies, they are now in an interesting stage, the mechanism of love is beginning to express itself." (Georg Büchner)

Prinz Leonce from the kingdom of Popo is bored and frustrated. Life as a future king and the wedding with Princess Lena from the kingdom of Pipi do not seem very meaningful to him. He flees to Italy with the hedonist and idler Valerio. Lena, too, seeks to escape the arranged engagement and flees into the distance. The two meet - without knowing each other - and fall in love - instantly. Masked as automatons, they are married in place of the untraceable royal children - only to discover, after being unpuppeted, that they have married the very person for whom they were intended from the beginning. Coincidence? Providence?
