Provenance Research at the mdw


The Nazi Provenance Research working group has been active at the mdw Library since 2012; the first publication summarising the state of research was released in 2014. In 2022/23, as part of the research activities for the exhibition If These Objects Could Speak. The Resonance of Contemporary History: The mdw* during Austrofascism, National Socialism, and Post-Nazism, research into restitution cases was resumed.

Since May 2025, provenance research at the mdw has been conducted as part of a project curated by the Archives, the Institute for Musicology and Performance Studies, and the Library. The aim of the project is a structured review of the library collection (books and sheet music) as well as a survey of the collection of historical instruments at the mdw.
