10th Symposium of the ICTMD Study Group on Music and Dance in Southeastern Europe
Opening
The 10th ICTMD (International Council for Traditional Music and Dance) Study Group Symposium on Music and Dance in Southeastern Europe brings together music and dance researchers and artists working on the Balkan Peninsula and surrounding regions.
The ICTMD is the world’s leading international organisation in ethnomusicology and ethnochoreology, and its Study Group on Music and Dance in Southeastern Europe serves as the central platform for discourse on the region's rich and varied music and dance traditions. The Study Group’s 10th symposium is taking place in Vienna, a city not usually considered part of Southeastern Europe, but which has strong historical and contemporary migration links to the region.
The event features panels, roundtables, and paper presentations on three symposium themes. In addition to scholarship related to Migration and the Politics of Othering, particularly relevant to the symposium’s venue, Vienna, the symposium will also feature contributions to the topics Music and Dance as Labor – Economic Aspects of Sound and Movement, and socio-politically oriented insights into Research and Activism in Music and Dance. The symposium’s frame program encompasses numerous topical concerts, evening programmes, student performances, workshops, and an excursion day to the Croatian village of Stinjaki in Southern Burgenland.
