TODAS. Latin American Women* Musicians in Vienna.
Concerts. Lecture. Dialogues.
TODAS is a two-day scientific and artistic festival that puts Latin American women* musicians in the diaspora in the spotlight —in all their diversity in terms of origin, musical creativity, and social positioning It brings current research into dialogue with contemporary music practice in Vienna.
The word “todas” is the feminine form of the word “all” in Spanish and programmatic for the content of the festival: we take a reflective look at the special positioning of women* musicians from Latin America in Europe and the associated challenges of categorization, presentation, and marketing. Discourses on belonging and identity are intertwined with national classifications, musical expectations, and cultural othering. The academic inputs examine the mechanisms behind the stereotyping of Latin American women and address the challenge of researching current musical practice in post-migrant society. The musical contributions highlight the diversity of musical expression by women* musicians from Latin America in Vienna. Concerts by six outstanding contemporary women* musicians from various Latin American countries based in Vienna will bring different musical genres to the stage. These will be complemented on the first day by a keynote lecture on music and gender in the Latin American diaspora, and on the second day by a panel discussion including the curator, scholars and musicians.
