_____

The training of future teachers in artistic/instrumental pedagogy requires specific goals and methods: teaching as such, coupled with self-reflection, should be the principal focus, in contrast to normal instrumental studies where pedagogical subjects take on a minor supporting role.

The Ludwig van Beethoven Department of Piano in Music Education is the only university department in Austria that dedicates itself entirely to piano instruction in the music pedagogical studies ME/IME, IGP, MBP, in the Preparatory Programme for Piano, and in Teaching Practice and Didactics for Piano.

Tying into years of experience in “learning”, we understand that the instrumental lesson is the place where old habits are critically analysed and solutions and new approaches are worked on. This process and the newly won insights are the basis for one’s own future teaching. A well-coordinated team of professors at the Ludwig van Beethoven Department understands the differentiations which arise in such a wide range of pedagogical offerings and possibilities for the use of the piano—from the concert hall to the school situation—in studying and using the piano to its fullest while working with varying focal points and development of new concepts.
