Welcome to summer semester 2026

The Department of Composition Studies and Music Production wishes all staff and students a good start to the semester.

Student wins Best Sound Design in a Feature Film

Daniel STRUBE, a film sound student at our department, won the Best Sound Design in a Feature Film award at the Diagonale for the film Licht, kein Licht by director Matthias van Baaren.

Jury Statement:

The sound design creates a strangely precise system of recurring sounds, such as the grinding of a coffee machine or the suction inside a car. Through mechanical sonic repetitions, the sound design evokes a feeling that is both familiar and unsettling, laying the sonic foundation for a haunting film.

The IKT extends its heartfelt congratulations!

Five-time EMMY® Award winner Jeff BEAL, with his improvisational skills, keen sense of timing, and sophistication, is a favorite of directors such as Ed Harris (Pollock and Appaloosa), David Fincher (House of Cards), Oliver Stone (JFK Revisited, The Putin Interviews), Lauren Greenfeld (The Queen of Versailles, Generation Wealth), and Rob Reiner (Shock and Awe). His work on the documentaries Blackfish, The Biggest Little Farm, Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Sequel, Athlete A, Frank Marshall’s Rather, and his dramatic soundtracks for HBO’s Rome, Carnivàle, The Newsroom, USA’s Monk, Netflix’s House of Cards, and Apple TV+’s Raymond & Ray have made him one of the most distinctive and well-known composers of our time. His film music, as well as the new song “We Believe in Hope” for Angel Studios’ Rule Breakers—which he co-wrote with Joan Beal and Aryana Sayeed—was honored by the United Nations on July 12, 2025, on the International Day of Hope, and received the High Note Global Prize.

Passive participation is possible.
A piano concert will follow in the evening (7:00 p.m.).

Topic:
Time Travel Through Sound: How Old Tapes Become New Spaces
From Historical Multitracks to Immersive Music Productions

The inaugural lecture provides insight into the practice of modern music production using selected Dolby Atmos mixes of historical recordings by Falco. The starting point is analog multitrack recordings from the 1980s; their restoration, synchronization, and the reconstruction of the original mix lay the foundation for new immersive sound spaces. The lecture demonstrates how knowledge of historical production methods, technical developments, and artistic sound aesthetics interact—from working with digitized tape archives to the implementation of current immersive formats. A preview of a current production illustrates how these principles continue to apply in the present day.
