women* and gender|queer|diversity-related themes at mdw: from 1817-2017 and beyond
Hall and Web Resources
spiel macht raum –
ein Spiel öffnet einen Raum, schafft Möglichkeiten;
play creates space
play opens up space, creates possibilities
wer darf spielen, wer in den Raum eintreten,
welche Voraussetzungen sind zu erfüllen?
who is allowed to play, who may enter the space,
what requirements need to be met?
spiel macht traum –
Spiel erzeugt aber auch imaginäre Räume, Träume,
an deren Umsetzung gearbeitet werden kann.
Wie gehen wir mit Macht um? Wie nutzen wir
die Spielräume des Gestaltens?
play creates dreams
play also produces imagined spaces, dreams,
that can be developed into reality.
How do we deal with power? How do we make use of
the playing field that creation offers?
The virtual project spiel|mach|t|raum. women* at mdw 1817-2017 www.mdw.ac.at/spielmachtraum was established to mark the bicentenary of mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna. Launched on March 8, 2017 it serves as a knowledge resource highlighting women’s her*stories at the mdw.
spiel|mach|t|raum is conceived as a digital space for remembrance that gives visibility to historic voices. Texts, images, audio materials, and archival sources are combined to create a site where both history and personal stories are told, including, for example, the establishment of Gender Studies at mdw and the university’s first female lectures and professors.

In 2017, the event space of the Center for Further Education was also opened and named spiel|mach|t|raum. Each academic year, the hall is dedicated to a specific woman* or, since 2024, to a particular Gender|Diversity theme. These dedications are announced at an annual event, providing inspiration for the academic year and further embedding these subjects into mdw’s culture of remembrance.
