Ivar Roban Križić is a musician, composer, performer, curator, and artistic researcher based in Vienna. His work moves between experimental music, improvisation, performance, and artistic research, with a particular focus on the relation between musical action, reflection, cognition, and embodied knowledge.
He studied double bass at the jazz department of the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz and completed a doctorate in artistic research at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. His doctoral project, Performing Reflection: Improvisation in Word, Thought and Action, investigated the simultaneous unfolding of double bass improvisation and spoken theoretical reflection. The project explored how reflection-in-action can become part of performance itself, combining musical improvisation, verbal thought, artistic research, and concepts from improvisation studies.
Križić’s artistic practice spans contemporary jazz, experimental music, free improvisation, and interdisciplinary performance. He has performed and presented work in various international contexts and has participated in artistic residencies, conferences, and research-oriented performance formats. His current artistic research investigates artificial memory, verbal improvisation, mnemonic structures, and the performer-composer as a figure whose practice moves across composition, performance, reflection, and embodied knowledge.
In addition to his artistic work, Križić teaches artistic research and practice-based research formats at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna.
