Violin & Chamber Music Masterclasses with Joseph Puglia
Joseph Puglia is an internationally active violinist and teacher whose work spans from historically informed performance to contemporary music and will be visiting mdw from November 11th-13th.
Puglia has worked with composers including György Kurtág, Kaija Saariaho, John Adams, and Pierre Boulez, and also performs with period-instrument musicians and ensembles. He teaches at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and brings a wide-ranging experience of musical styles and performance contexts to his teaching.
In the summer semester, together with musicologist and mdw teacher Clive Brown, Joseph will be teaching EchoLab, an IN.TUNE joint online course for mdw students on 19th-century performance practice. The course will explore historical approaches to the performance of 19th-century music, in a laboratory environment, through practical experimentation, research, and discussion.
As part of his visit to mdw in November, Joseph will offer violin and chamber music masterclasses, introducing EchoLab to mdw students. Students are invited to bring repertoire they are currently working on - with a focus on but not reduced to - 19th century repertoire and to explore it together. Whether you are interested in traditional approaches, contemporary performance, or historically informed practice, the masterclasses are an opportunity to bring your repertoire to a performer with extensive experience across contemporary, chamber, orchestral, and historically informed performance. Period-instrument players are also very welcome; for these students, the focus will be on 19th-century repertoire.
