Die Dringlichkeit für Künstler_innen, sich mit der existenziellen Bedrohung durch den Klimawandel auseinanderzusetzen, wirft die Frage auf, wie dies geschehen könnte oder sollte. Künstler_innen sind zwar wahrscheinlich nicht unbedingt Expert_innen, wenn es darum geht, den CO2-Fußabdruck einer Performance zu berechnen, aber sie sind hochqualifiziert, um die Grenzen zwischen Natur und Kultur zu erforschen oder sogar grundlegend in Frage zu stellen. Muss Kunst notwendigerweise künstlich im Sinne von unnatürlich sein? Wäre es nicht ein künstlerischer Ansatz, sich von Abstraktion und Distanziertheit – vielleicht sogar von menschlicher Arroganz – zu lösen und sich buchstäblich die Hände schmutzig zu machen?

The urgency for artists to address the existential threat of climate change raises the question of how this could or should be done. While artists are probably not necessarily experts when it comes to calculating the carbon footprint of a performance, they are highly qualified to explore the boundaries between nature and culture or even to question them fundamentally. Must art necessarily be artificial in the sense of unnatural? Wouldn’t it be an artistic approach to move away from abstraction and aloofness—perhaps even from human arrogance—and literally get our hands dirty?
