Exilarte – Center for Banned Music, which joined our institution as an mdw Research Center in 2016, has now spent two decades devoting itself to the musical estates of individuals who were persecuted, forced into exile, or murdered by the National Socialists—thereby preserving a significant chapter of European music history that might have been lost forever without its efforts. Forgotten musical works and the life stories behind them are painstakingly collected, archived, and prepared by Exilarte for public presentation in its regularly occurring exhibitions, concerts featuring works that are often entirely unknown today, and publications. On the following pages, we introduce the Exilarte Center’s important work and invite you to immerse yourself in the associated history and individual stories at one of the numerous events taking place to mark Exilarte’s 20th anniversary in 2026.
