The fact that cultural and above all musical diversity have (and indeed must have) an established place at our university is what this issue’s Special serves to highlight. We retrace the development of folk music research and ethnomusicology at the mdw from these disciplines’ initial stirrings here to the present day, going on to survey what is a lively and constantly evolving overall field characterised by outstanding contributions in the realms of academic research and artistic practice.
