The mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, honors Women’s and Gender Studies scholar Evelyn Torton Beck, a pioneer in Women's and Gender studies, with an Honorary Doctorate.
The renowned Vienna-born scholar and researcher receives the award for her outstanding academic pursuits and her commitment towards initiating the scholarly discussion across a rich spectrum of issues relevant to scientific and societal critique and closely associated with art.
Evelyn Torton Beck was born in Vienna in 1933 and was compelled to emigrate, fleeing from the Nazi regime, at the age of 6. She studied comparative literature and received her doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1969.
In 1982, she accepted a professorship in Comparative Literature, German and Women's Studies at that same university. In 1984, she received an appointment at the University of Maryland in Washington, D.C., where she established the Women's Studies program. Nice Jewish Girls: A Lesbian Anthology (1982, 1989) represents one of her most successful publications.
After retiring in 2002, she received her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Fielding Graduate University in 2004, where she remains an Alumni Fellow at the Creative Longevity and Wisdom Project.
Her work on voice, language, translation – she translated from Yiddish into English with Nobel laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer – social justice in theory and practice, multiculturalism, sexism, racism, anti-Semitism, homophobia, ageism, ableism, and lookism, as well as the healing effects of art, continues to be groundbreaking. A pioneer on so many levels, she also wrote poetry, painted and still dances to this day.
Evelyn Torton Beck lives in Washington, D.C.
