Ethel Smyth and her queer contemporaries
Official Concert of EuroPride Vienna 2019

The British composer Ethel Smyth (1858 – 1944) had a close relationship with Vienna and her works were regularly performed here. Smyth, who mainly had relationships with women, fought as a feminist for the women suffrage.

In addition to Smyth's compositions, works by Pëtr Il'ič Čajkovskij, whom she met personally, and her friends Elisabeth von Herzogenberg and Mathilde Kralik will also be heard. Compositions by her queer contemporaries Vilma Webenau and Reynaldo Hahn complete the programme.
