Master's programme Musicology

The four-semester scientific-artistic Master of Arts in Musicology at the mdw - University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna is aimed at students who are interested in the fundamentals of musicology and current research discourses in historical musicology and who wish to study these both theoretically and scientifically-practically. The latter includes both the practice of research (research-based learning) and scientific-artistic practice. The programme provides comprehensive knowledge in various thematic areas and theoretical-methodological approaches of historical musicology, as well as insights into other musicological disciplines and other interdisciplinary fields. It is possible to set an individual focus within the research priorities of the Department of Musicology and Performance Studies (IMI) (cultural studies, philosophy of music, music theory and analysis, contemporary musical history, interpretation research).

Admission to the Master of Arts in Musicology requires a Bachelor of Arts in a relevant subject or at least 180 ECTS credits at the same higher education level from a recognised domestic or foreign post-secondary educational institution.

Relevant preliminary studies are in any case a degree programme in musicology, a degree programme in humanities and cultural studies or such musical or musical-pedagogical degree programmes at a recognised post-secondary educational institution that include an academic component.
