Studierbarkeitsmonitoring

What does Studierbarkeit mean?

How feasible is it to achieve a degree under different personal conditions? What structural barriers do students encounter, and how can these be reduced?

The mdw has been addressing these questions and, in 2020, developed a monitoring tool designed specifically for the needs of arts universities.

Studierbarkeit (roughly translated as "studyability") at the mdw encompasses the following aspects:

  • Minimising formal and structural obstacles throughout the entire student life cycle
  • Supporting students in their academic development and guiding them through to graduation and professional entry
  • Considering individual prerequisites and interests (diversity)
  • Promoting students' personal satisfaction with their studies and academic progress – including informal conditions
  • Providing advisory and support services tailored to individual needs

An early project report documents the main considerations during the development phase.

Monitoring

In order to systematically improve study conditions at the mdw, the Studierbarkeitsmonitoring is carried out alongside the process of curriculum development. Existing data sources are systematically analyzed and, depending on needs, supplemented by additional surveys and group discussions within individual degree programmes. The specific aspects of Studierbarkeit examined, as well as the data used, are determined based on the situation and identified needs. The goal is to establish a data-driven foundation for the continuous development of curricula.

Data Sources

The monitoring process draws on both quantitative and qualitative data:

  • Internal data from the Organisational Unit Quality Management, including:
  • Surveys or group interviews:

As part of surveys or group discussions, students have the opportunity to share their experiences in their studies. The results are evaluated and processed anonymously and make an important contribution to incorporating the student perspective into the curricular development process.
