Creating a Space for Transcultural Experience:
The Movement of 'Meeting of Knowledges' in Latin American Universities

The Latin American continent is marked, since the colonial days, by the ideologies of mixing of races, cultural hybridity, in-betweenness, and syncretism. It was in the context of these ideas that the concept of transculturation was coined, in 1940, by Cuban anthropologist and ethnomusicologist Fernando Ortiz. Seventy-six years later, we are still searching for ways of implementing transculturality in order to overcome hierarchies and prejudices between peoples and nations.

Since its beginning in 2010 in the University of Brasília, the Meeting of Knowledges has promoted the inclusion of masters of traditional knowledges (Indigenous, Afro-Brazilian, and of popular cultures) as Visiting Professors in regular courses, undergraduate and graduate, in spite of the fact they do not have academic titles, and most of them are illiterate.

The project (or rather, movement), has already expanded to several Brazilian universities as well as to other Latin American countries. The meeting of traditional masters (and many of them are masters of music and correlated performing arts) with academics of the Western type of doctorate is generating a pluriepistemic space where it has become possible to transcend the modern academic monoculture and finally to experience the condition of transculturality.

Ismael Ivo: Delirium of a Childhood (Videoaufzeichnung)

Ismael Ivo zeigt eine Videoaufzeichnung seines Solostückes Delirium of a Childhood.
