Environmental Mission Statement
As one of the world’s most renowned educational institutions in the field of the performing arts, the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna is fully aware of its responsibility towards society and future generations. It is therefore part of our identity that we address the current challenges of climate change and the finite nature of our planet’s resources, and that we are committed to sustainability in teaching, research, and the development and promotion of the arts (EEK).
Pioneering role
Excellence and the highest quality in all disciplines characterise the mdw, its staff and students. We also strive to play this pioneering role in the various areas of sustainability. We are therefore committed to the responsible use of ecological, economic and social resources, as well as to treating one another with respect and care.
Courageous and creative together
With courage and creativity, we want to develop new ideas together to help shape the path towards a meaningful and sustainable development of today’s and tomorrow’s society. All members of the mdw should have the opportunity to get actively involved with enthusiasm, so that sustainability is firmly embedded in everyday university life.
Systemic environmental protection
By developing and implementing our environmental management system in accordance with EMAS and ISO 14001:2015, we have laid the foundations for a continuous improvement process in environmental protection. Through this, we aim to regularly and critically assess the effectiveness of our environmental protection activities, identify risks and opportunities in good time, and implement the necessary preventive, corrective and improvement measures.
Legal compliance and emergency preparedness
As a key aspect of emergency preparedness, we are committed to complying with the relevant environmental protection and safety legislation applicable to us.
Sustainable procurement
The focus of procurement management lies in the needs-based assessment and review of requirements for the university’s equipment and facilities. With this in mind, we are stepping up our efforts to utilise existing resources through internal redistribution. Furthermore, compliance with environmental and social standards is an increasingly important aspect when awarding contracts. We utilise state-of-the-art technology in accordance with economic feasibility.
Conserving resources
We use resources, goods and energy sparingly, avoid pollutants and sort waste to enable recycling. Furthermore, we strive to meet our energy needs from environmentally friendly energy sources.
Appreciation, well-being and inclusion
Flexible working time models help our staff to balance work and family life. We promote the health and well-being of all mdw members through measures to ensure healthy working and study conditions. Living out diversity, inclusion and gender equality in everyday university life is a particular priority for us.
Good communication at all levels
To ensure effective environmental management, we encourage regular and constructive communication at and between all levels of our university, thereby maintaining an open dialogue with all our internal and external stakeholders.
