Eco management at the mdw
Since 2018, the mdw has been evaluating the progress made in improving its environmental performance and achieving the goal of climate neutrality in line with the roadmap by means of regular greenhouse gas balancing. The emission factors defined in the GHG balancing tool ClimCalc serve as the basis for calculating emissions.
ÖKOPROFIT - ÖkoBusiness Wien
In 2019, the mdw participated for the first time in the ÖKOPROFIT environmental program as part of OekoBusiness Wien, the environmental service package of the City of Vienna, and received the ÖKOPROFIT award in the same year. This laid the foundation for the introduction of a corporate environmental management system.
Environmental management according to EMAS
In 2020, the decision was made to systematize climate and environmental protection at the mdw by integrating an environmental management system in accordance with EMAS and ISO 14001:2015. Together with DIE UMWELTBERATUNG, the implementation of EMAS began in April 2020.
The mdw's initial certification process was successfully completed in April 2023.
EMAS organizations communicate their environmental performance openly and transparently in an environmental statement, which is updated annually. Dialogue with the public is an indispensable component of an environmental management system in accordance with EMAS.

Environmental Management Award 2023 – mdw honored in the best environmental statement category
The Austrian Federal Ministry for for Climate Action, the Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK) and the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) award companies and organizations for outstanding achievements in environmental and climate protection, sustainable corporate management and environmental communication.
As part of the certification of the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) in April of this year, the mdw's first environmental report was published at the same time and submitted for the Environmental Management Award 2023.
We are delighted that the mdw has been selected as one of the winners of the prize awarded by Austria and Germany. The award ceremony and certificate presentation by Federal Minister Leonore Gewessler took place on November 24, 2023.
