Climate neutrality path

In November 2023, the mdw Rectorate adopted the mdw Roadmap to Climate Neutrality.

In phase 1, the mdw has set itself the goal of reducing its annual greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% by 2030. The calculation is based on the greenhouse gas balance with data from 2018, created using the ClimCalc balancing tool.

The mdw's long-term climate neutrality target is to reduce at least 80% of annual emissions by 2040 (phase 2) (reference year 2018) and to offset unavoidable residual emissions through climate protection projects.

Taking into account an estimated growth of 10% in the areas of teaching and research, administrative staff, etc., this results in a starting point of 4,683 tons of CO2-e total emissions.

Progress

The following charts show the development of mdw's greenhouse gas emissions in the categories of energy, materials and mobility (business trips/outgoings and commuting) since 2018. The green marks indicate the reduction target in percent.
