From 1 to 5 December 2014 a joint project of the Department for Composition and Electroacoustics with the Chai Found Music Workshop took place at the mdw. The Taiwanese musicians Huikuan Li (pipa), Chung-Hsien Wu and Tsai Pei-Yun (bamboo flute) and Chaoming Tung (composition) presented the traditional Chinese stringed instrument pipa and bamboo flute.
They also had the opportunity to play the instruments and compose for it. The challenge of writing for a mixed ensemble of Eastern and Western instruments promises a surprising and exciting listening experience!
The outcome of the workshop resulted in a small concert series, which will be held from 20 to 22 April 2015 at the mdw and at the Essl Museum Klosterneuburg: Together with the Pacific Quartet Vienna over 20 compositions by students and instructors of the classes "Media Composition" and "Electroacoustic Music" are to be performed.
On our YouTube channel you will find a recording of the workshop - in addition to an insight into the exercises you will also hear examples of traditional Chinese music.
Please find further informationen about the project in the documentation of mdw students Hannah Eisendle and Chenwei Wang (pdf, German 1.84mb)
