International Mobility for Early-stage Researchers

The mdw offers grants for short stays abroad that serve a dissertation, a research project or the active participation in an international conference. Part of the actual costs of the trip or stay abroad can be reimbursed.

Early-stage researchers (ESR) at the mdw are eligible to apply:

  • PhD students in the research phase of their dissertations with main supervisor at the mdw
  • PhD graduates of the mdw within the first 4 years after completion of their PhD studies (care responsibilities are taken into account)

Funding is available for

  • research stays (max. 2 months) for inquiries at archives, libraries, fieldwork, interviews, etc. which are necessary for the dissertation or a research project and which cannot be funded in ERASMUS+
  • active participation in conferences abroad (accepted submission/paper). On a case-by-case basis, the active participation in international conferences within Austria may also be eligible.

Eligible expenses include

  • travel expenses, accommodation costs, visa costs, fees for library use, conference fees, etc. after submission of the original receipts

In general, only expenditures that meet the requirements of economic efficiency, proportionality and environmental compatibility are eligible for funding. This includes, for example, avoiding short distance flights wherever possible (see https://www.mdw.ac.at/gruene-mdw/).

A maximum of € 1,500 can be reimbursed per trip.

Delimitation

The fund is complementary to other sources of funding and resources of the departments. Study visits (e.g. attendance of seminars/lectures/courses), which can be funded e.g. within the framework of ERASMUS+ mobility, are NOT funded. PhD students planning research trips and stays of 5-30 days within Europe are requested to send an inquiry for a short-term Erasmus+ mobility grant to the International Office (Ms. Melanie Karner) or for an Erasmus+ Staff-Training grant to the Zentrum für Weiterbildung (Ms. Sophia Simon) of the mdw in advance.

Similarly, participation in conferences and summer schools is NOT funded if these do not primarily serve the active presentation of one's own research project. Furthermore, double funding is excluded. Applicants are obliged to disclose the receipt of any third-party funding when submitting their application.

Grants are awarded on a first come - first served basis and according to availability of funds. First-time applicants will be given preference. There is no legal claim to the reimbursement.

Submission of applications

Applications should be submitted in good time - in any case at least 6 weeks before the start of the journey! The submission is continuously possible. The application consists of a form including attached documents. Applications are to be sent by e-mail to forschungsfoerderung@mdw.ac.at.

Assessment criteria

Submitted applications will be evaluated based on whether and to what degree the proposed activities serve the career development of ESR, as well as whether they meet the requirements of cost-effectiveness, proportionality, and environmental sustainability.

Reporting and settlement

Invoices must be submitted together with an informal report no later than 4 weeks after the return of the trip for the costs to be refunded. In the case the applicant is currently employed by the mdw, the form travel allowance (Reisekostenzuschuss - German only) must also be filled out; if there is no current employment relationship, the form for reimbursement of expenses (Spesenersatz - German only) must be filled out. Please send all documents to forschungsfoerderung@mdw.ac.at!

After your return

You are invited to give a testimonial for the International Blog.

For employees at the mdw

If applicants have official obligations for the period of absence, they must also submit a request for leave of absence (Freistellung - German only) to their superiors.
