FWF Open Access Funding

Costs for the open access publishing of peer-reviewed journal articles, contributions to edited volumes, etc. resulting in whole or in part from FWF-funded projects will be supported by means of an Open-Access Block Grant provided in addition to the approved project budget. As of January 1, 2024, this block grant will be processed by the mdw Research Support.

Which costs are eligible for funding?

  • Costs for peer-reviewed publications under a CC BY license in DOAJ-listed, gold open-access journals (fully open access)
  • Fees for diamond open-access platforms and alternative OA publishing platforms, if the publications are published under a CC BY license and without an embargo period

Which costs are not eligible?

  • Costs for open-access publications in subscription journals (hybrid open access)
  • Other costs associated with publication that are not subject to open access (e.g. page charges, color charges, cover charges)
  • Costs for delayed or retroactive open access publication
  • Reading access costs
  • Costs for publications with licenses other than the CC BY license
  • Open-access fees associated with peer-reviewed monographs, entire edited volumes, or entire Special Issues. These costs are still eligible for funding under the FWF’s Book Publications program.

What are the general requirements?

  • The publication must result in whole or in part from FWF-funded projects, must have undergone a peer review process and fulfil the publication requirements set by the FWF Open Access Policy.
  • The corresponding author must have a valid affiliation with the mdw and state this affiliation in the publication. The corresponding author is the person who is the official contact for the publisher and is identified as such in the publication itself.
  • The following text must be included in all publications upon submission:

“This research was funded in whole or in part by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) [grant DOI]. For open access purposes, the author has applied a CC BY public copyright license to any author accepted manuscript version arising from this submission.”

„Diese Forschung wurde gänzlich oder teilweise durch den Wissenschaftsfonds FWF finanziert [Grant-DOI]. Zum Zweck des freien Zugangs hat der:die Autor:in für jedwede akzeptierte Manuskriptversion, die sich aus dieser Einreichung ergibt, eine „Creative Commons Attribution CC BY“-Lizenz vergeben.“ (for publications in German)

Application

Before submitting a manuscript, please contact the Research Support directly (forschungsfoerderung@mdw.ac.at) to find out more about possible open access funding options and the respective conditions.

By arrangement with the Research Support, the publication costs are first paid to the publisher/journal by the Department/Organsational Unit of the project leader and then reimbursed by the Research Support via internal cost allocation. The request for reimbursement is submitted informally to forschungsfoerderung@mdw.ac.at and must contain the following information:

  • Details of the FWF project from which the publication originated in whole or in part (title and project number/grant DOI)
  • Information on the publication: title, type (journal article/contribution in an edited volume/publication platform), DOI, journal, publisher, licence, costs (description and amount)
  • Required attachments:
  1. Copy of the invoice from the publisher (*.pdf). Please note that a clear connection between the invoice and the article must be established, for example via the persistent identifier or the title on the invoice.
  2. Proof of payment in euros (*.pdf), e.g. an SAP statement with clear references to the connection between invoice and proof of payment.
  3. Completed mdw form "internal cost allocation" (internal order number of Research Support to be charged: FV00OA00).

If the request for reimbursement is complete, fulfils the funding conditions and as long as FWF funding is available, the costs will be reimbursed by the Research Support to the specified internal order number of the Department. If FWF funds are exhausted, we will contact you to discuss further funding options.
