Selini Quartet

Hailing from Russia, Romania, and Greece, these four young musicians met in Vienna, where they founded the Selini Quartet in 2017. With their powerful sound and multifaceted emotions, they have since that time performed in several of Vienna’s most important concert halls, at numerous chamber music festivals, and all across Europe.

The Selini Quartet won the “mdw great talent award 2020” and was a prize-winner at the 2021 “Prague Spring International Music Competition”, the 2021 “Ysaÿe IMC”, and the 2018 “Szymanowski International Music Competition”. In the 2020–2022 seasons, the Selini Quartet is part of the programme of the NASOM (New Austrian Sound of Music). The four musicians all study at the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and since their group’s founding have worked there under the direction of Johannes Meissl (Artis Quartett) to deepen their understanding of music. The have also drawn inspiration from other wonderful musicians such as Hatto Beyerle (Alban Berg Quartett), Evgenia Epshtein (Aviv Quartet), and Patrick Jüdt.

mdw great talent award

The mdw great talent award, established by Christian Zeller, was first awarded in autumn 2020 and in keeping with its motto “We offer support today to the stars of tomorrow” is devoted exclusively to students at the mdw in the areas of keyboard instruments, bowed and other stringed instruments, wind and percussion instruments, chamber music and special ensembles, voice and music theatre, and popular music. Performing experience and professionalism are fundamental requirements. The founder and benefactor Christian Zeller emphasises the importance of excellence and sustainability, which are the focal points of the activities of the Christian Zeller Privatstiftung, particularly for arts and culture: “When one thinks of excellence in the area of culture, one can’t help but think of Austria—and the mdw plays a crucial role in this regard.”
