Wien, den 15.10.2026 |
Liebe Kolleg:innen,

Vienna, October 15 |
Dear colleagues,
we hope you’ve had a good start to the new academic year! It was with a heavy heart that we said goodbye to our Data Steward, Olja Janjuš, at the end of September; she will be focusing on her dissertation going forward. We wish her the best of luck and thank her for the wonderful collaboration! Of course, the Research Support Office will continue to handle your data management needs.
We have some very exciting news from the external funding sector. mdw faculty members have secured funding for three new FWF projects:
Our warmest congratulations to Ioannis Christidis (Music and Minorities Research Center) for the project “Performing Liberation? SWANA EDM on European Dancefloors” (ESPRIT) and to Adam Czirak, the new professor of dramaturgy at the Max Reinhardt Seminar, for the project “Between Institutional Critique and Theater Reform” (PAT). Last but not least, we congratulate Milena Amann-Rauter on the approval of her project “Sounding Confession” (ESPRIT) at the Institute for Musicology and Performance Studies. She was able to use the mdw’s Postdoc-Fellowship for her proposal.
We extend our warmest congratulations to the 2026 postdoctoral fellows! Clemens Kreutzfeldt will be working on his proposal at the Institute for Musicology and Performance Studies over the next few months, while Ivar Roban Križić will be working at the Artistic Research Center. We thank the jury members who made the selection from among the six applications, all of which were of very high quality.
We also welcome two colleagues to the International Research Center – Gender and Performativity (ICGP) with their FWF projects: Marietta Kesting with the project “Don’t Wake Up! Future Dreaming in the Arts” (Elise Richter) and Sebastian Kirsch with the project “Street Scenes: Transformations of the Street as a Theatrical Space” (Erwin Schrödinger).
We congratulate Evelyn Annuß, director of the ICGP, on her reelection to the FWF Scientific Board for the three-year term ending in 2029.
mdw-internal funding:
Due to high demand, the budget for the 2026 mobility grants has already been exhausted, and we can report very positive results regarding the international presence of early-stage researchers at the mdw! Applications for 2027 are now being accepted; the revised guidelines will soon be published on our Website.
There are changes regarding funding for open-access publications from the mdw’s internal publication fund: As of January 1, 2027, publications in subscription-based journals with paid open-access options (hybrid model) will no longer be funded.
FWF Applications:
The FWF once again expressly warns against the improper use of AI tools when preparing applications: The applicant bears full responsibility for all content. If significant portions of an application are created using AI tools, this must be disclosed. Due to the increased number of applications, the FWF will publish new guidelines in mid-November.
Science Communication:
We are particularly pleased about the recently published special issue of mdwMagazin on Science Communication and would like to thank everyone who contributed to it!
As part of the Science Program at VHS Urania, we are seeking citizen science projects for 2027 that can be presented in lectures. If you’re interested, please feel free to contact us!
Research Data Management:
We congratulate Sonja Stojak of the Institute for Musical Acoustics – Wiener Klangstil, who secured one of the coveted spots in the University of Vienna’s Data Stewards certificate course. The participation fees are covered by Research Support Office from mdw’s internal resources. This marks the third time that targeted support has been provided to build expertise within the mdw-institutes.
Finally, we cordially invite you to our upcoming events:
