About Anny Felbermayer

Anny Felbermayer (full name: Anna Maria Felbermayer-Szekely), who was born in Vienna on 21 July 1924 and passed away here on 5 September 2014, was a Lied, oratorio, and opera singer (lyric soprano).

Felbermayer specified various non-profit institutions including the mdw as beneficiaries in her will. The mdw used her parting gift to endow the “Anny Felbermayer-Fonds”, a fund dedicated to supporting talented students.

12 December 2017 saw the former rehearsal stage at the mdw’s Department of Vocal Studies and Music Theatre officially named the Anny Felbermayer Rehearsal Stage; it was inaugurated with a concert by scholarship recipients.

Following graduation from her studies in piano and voice at the mdw in 1949, Felbermayer went on to win first prizes at competitions in Vienna, Geneva, and Verviers. She soon joined the permanent ensemble of the Vienna State Opera and also accepted engagements at La Scala in Milan, the Brussels Opera, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, and the Salzburg Festival.

Her repertoire included the cantatas of J. S. Bach, all of Mozart’s songs, works by Joseph Haydn, and numerous operas, Lieder, arias, and oratorios by Beethoven, Brahms, Richard Strauss, and Gustav Mahler. She worked together with numerous important conductors including Clemens Krauss, Herbert von Karajan, and Erich Kleiber.

Over the course of her life, Anny Felbermayer received a number of important honours for her achievements including the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art in 1969, the Ring of Honour of the Association of Soloists of the Vienna State Opera in 1975, and the professional title of “Österreichische Kammersängerin” in 1983.
