Analysing the process of composition in contemporary music
Lecture by Nicolas Donin, IRCAM Paris

On Thursday, 19 March 2015 a guest lecture by Nicolas Donin takes place at the mdw. He is music researcher and leader of the research centre at the "Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique" of the IRCAM Paris.
His research mainly focuses on music since the 19th century as well as the empirical musicology research of contemporary composers, performers and music publications.
Over the course of the 20th century, composers have increasingly been asked to express themselves about their art, be it in the form of published writings or interviews. Audiences are enjoying a flurry of recorded music from virtually every time and place. Despite the widespread accessibility both of musical pieces and musicians' discourse, how musical pieces are practically created is still a mystery. What procedures, techniques, knowledge and artistic expertise do musicians utilize when they produce music?
Since 2003, my research group at IRCAM has been undertaking a series of case studies in the creative process of contemporary composers. We have studied their output both from a musicological perspective (drawing on music analysis and sketch studies) and as a situated cognitive process.
